Jalapeño Havarti Grilled Cheese (Printable Version)

A spicy take on the classic with creamy Havarti and jalapeño slices between golden, crispy sourdough bread.

# What You'll Need:

→ Bread

01 - 4 slices sourdough or country white bread

→ Dairy

02 - 4 oz Havarti cheese, sliced
03 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

→ Vegetables

04 - 1 fresh jalapeño, thinly sliced, seeds removed for milder heat

→ Optional

05 - 1 tablespoon mayonnaise for enhanced crispiness

# How-To Steps:

01 - Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat until evenly warmed.
02 - Butter one side of each bread slice evenly. Optionally, spread mayonnaise on the inside of each slice for richer flavor.
03 - Place two bread slices, buttered side down, on a clean surface. Layer with Havarti cheese and distribute jalapeño slices evenly over the cheese. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side facing outward.
04 - Place assembled sandwiches onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until bread is golden brown and cheese is fully melted.
05 - Remove from skillet, allow to cool for 1 minute, slice diagonally if desired, and serve immediately while hot.

# Tips for Success:

01 -
  • The heat cuts through the rich cheese in the most satisfying way
  • Takes literally fifteen minutes from start to finish
  • Perfect for those nights when you want comfort food but something a little exciting
02 -
  • Medium low heat is your friend here, high heat will burn the bread before the cheese melts
  • Buttering to the very edges ensures maximum crispiness and no soggy corners
  • A gentle press with the spatula helps the bread make contact with the cheese for even melting
03 -
  • Mayo on the inside creates a barrier that keeps the bread from getting soggy from the cheese
  • Letting the cheese come to room temperature before assembling helps it melt more evenly
  • A cast iron skillet gives the most even heat and the best golden crust
